Pittsburgh, PA, September 13, 2006—Plextronics, Inc., a world leader in developing active layer technology for printed electronic devices, is pleased to announce they were honored by The Wall Street Journal as a runner-up for the 2006 Wall Street Journal Innovation Award in Materials and Other Base Technologies. Plextronics is the sole Pennsylvania-headquartered company to receive this recognition.
The Wall Street Journal Innovation Awards are conferred annually by the publication’s editorial staff. The Wall Street Journal assembles a panel of judges representing industry as well as research and academic institutions to assess novel technologies from around the world in several categories: medicine and medical devices, wireless, security, consumer electronics, semiconductors and others. A Wall Street Journal editor initially screened more than 600 applications for this award and a panel of judges selected 12 category winners and 37 runners-up. In selecting winners, judges considered whether the technology truly represents a breakthrough from conventional methods, rather than just an incremental improvement.
Plextronics’ core technology platform, Plexcore™ technology, is designed to maximize the efficiency, lifetime and stability of printed electronic devices such as OLED displays and lighting, polymer solar cells and plastic circuitry. The tunable nature of Plexcore allows many “knobs to be turned” in both the polymer design and ink formulation stages, resulting in an ink that is optimized for specific applications. Breakthroughs in active layer technology will remove one of the last barriers to broad market commercialization of printed electronic devices. The printed electronics market is estimated to be $50+ billion industry by 2015.
“Being recognized by the Wall Street Journal as a leading innovator is truly exciting. I am proud of our world class team, customers, partners and general supporters. Their support continues to be critical as we make progress toward our vision: the broad market commercialization of printed electronic devices,” stated Andrew Hannah, Plextronics’ CEO.
About Plextronics, Inc. Plextronics, Inc. is the world leader in developing active layer technology for printed electronic devices - OLED displays and lighting, polymer solar cells and plastic circuitry. Active layer technology is the printed semiconductors and conductors that drive device performance. Plextronics has unsurpassed control of polymer design and ink formulation as well as an intimate understanding of device physics and its impact on device performance. This knowledge is applied to the creation of Plexcore™ technology which is specifically designed for each application to maximize device efficiency and operating lifetime in a cost effective manner. Plextronics’ awards include being honored by the 2006 Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Awards and winner of Frost and Sullivan’s 2005 Emerging Technology of the Year: Printed Electronics.
